  • Industrial design (Area)

    How do you make people live healthier lives? How can our commuter traffic become less polluting and more pleasant? How can products last longer and be easily recycled? From day one, Industrial Design teaches you how to design products that benefit people and society. Students learn about the aesthetics, user side and combine this with technology.

  • Study (Point)

    The number 50 can be seen at the main entrance of Industrial Design Engineering. This is in honor of the 50th anniversary of the faculty. Before the faculty's existence, Industrial Design was a specialization of the Faculty of Architecture (1962), which was called “Technical and Industrial Design”. In 2004, the study was given a new building and a whole new curriculum.

  • Reception (Point)

    The new faculty was built on the site of a converted workshop. As a result, the faculty has an impressive and multifunctional entrance hall. This hall consists of comfortable workplaces, tables and laptop areas. The renovation of the hall was also a symbol for the changes within education at the faculty. Above the reception all the names of the professors of the faculty can be seen.

  • Study places (Point)

    To make studying as easy as possible for all students, the faculty has different study rooms. The design of the study rooms depends on the type of education that is given at the location. There are a lot of group project tables in this hall. There are also quiet rooms and individual work areas around this large hall.

  • Applied labs - vr (Point)

    The Applied Labs take research at Industrial Design a step further than conventional tests in a laboratory setting. The product or service can be directly tested in the Applied Labs in an environment for which it is designed. This realistic, and therefore more complex, environment provides new insights and, moreover, better predictions can be made about interaction between humans and products.

    By using 3D scanning and 3D printing technology researchers can reproduce the material appearance of Fine Art in this part of the Applied Labs. The 3D printing technology can influence all aspects of the material: color printing but also controlling surface topography and gloss. Besides 3D printing, 3D scanning is also used. These two techniques can be used to make accurate reproductions of unique and valuable objects, such as the painting: “Girl with a Pearl Earring”.

    The 3D printing lab focuses on all aspects of 3D printing. Classic 3D printers are used for rapid prototyping, new printers are being developed to produce increasingly complex objects and 3D scanners are used for increasingly complex computer models.

  • Current research (Point)

    In today’s society, small artists can hardly get by and the number of visitors at art galleries is decreasing. To break this downward trend, research is conducted into how this can be improved. By using virtual reality, an attempt is made to improve the experience of an art gallery and to stimulate the purchase of works. In the same virtual environment, it is examined which interactions and functions ensure an improved user experience.

  • Iris van herpen (Point)

    Fashion designer Iris van Herpens, who has dressed Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, has designed a 3D-printed dress together with researchers from the Technical University of Delft. The dress is printed with new techniques that make it possible to combine plastics with natural fabrics. The production of the dress took around 320 hours and was the opening piece of a major fashion show in Paris.
